Betula pendula 'youngii' - Weeping Birch Tree

Betula pendula 'youngii' - Weeping Birch Tree is an elegant weeping form of the silver birch grafted on a 'standard' to form a graceful tree with long sweeping branches. Very effective as a specimen in parks and gardens where it has space to spread to its full potential.

Height: 2.5 metres.

Width: 4 metres.

Growth rate:  Moderate

Form: Betula pendula 'youngii' - Weeping Birch Tree is strongly pendulous, spreading to become flat-topped. Propagated onto an approximate one or 1.75 metre 'standard'.

Foliage: Bright green, triangular leaves with a doubly serrated margin. Butter yellow autumn colour.

Bark: Papery white, peeling when shed. The younger branches are smooth and brown in colour.

Tolerances: Prefers a moist, well drained soil, but will tolerate relatively wet or dry positions and poor soils. Adaptable to pH. Can be pruned annually to form a shape similar to that of a beach umbrella, or left almost unpruned to develop a natural sweeping habit. Any pruning should be carried out in late summer or early autumn, as pruning in late winter or early spring causes the tree to 'bleed' sap excessively. The autumn foliage colour is better in cool areas. Transplants easily. The root system is fine and shallow. Mulch is beneficial to maintain soil moisture and to lower the soil temperature during summer.

Landscape use: Betula pendula 'youngii' - Weeping Birch Tree is great as a specimen tree in parks and gardens.
