Citrus sinensis - Orange Valencia

Commonly referred to as a juicing orange, the Citrus Sinesis - Valencia fruit are medium in size with a distinctive, fresh tang. Valencia’s best traits being that the fruit will hang on the tree for months, becoming sweeter the longer it is left on the tree and it is seedless. It crops regularly. Beginning to ripen in winter the fruit can be harvested as required through to summer, making it ideal for the home gardener.

Height: 8 -10 metres. (Tends not to reach its maximum height in an urban environment.)

Width:  4 metres.

Growth rate: Moderate.

Form: Rounded

Foliage: The leaves are arranged alternately, are ovate in shape with crenulate margins and are 4–10 cm long.

Flower: White

Fruit:  The orange fruit is a hesperidium, a type of berry. mediumly sized, sweet and very juicy. High yielding from an early age.Can be grown outside through the Spring and Summer months but needs frost protection (a minimum of 5°C and ideally 10°C or higher).
Tolerances: Likes moist, well-drained soil with neutral ph level. Thrives under part shade to full sun.

Landscape use:  Citrus sinensis - Orange Valencia can be grown alone or in a hedge in the sun. Citrus makes a handsome accent to the landscape and a must in any tropical or Mediterranean garden.

Care: Citrus trees are gross feeders - that means they need to be fed in July, November and March with a good citrus and fruit tree fertiliser. Give them 125 grams for every year of the tree’s age at each of the applications. But when the tree gets to about 10 years old or older it needs 1 1/4 kg of fertiliser. Spread the fertiliser evenly around the drip zone, water in and the tree will power away.
If the Citrus sinensis - Orange Valencia fruits are sour there is a simple way to sweeten them. Sprinkle about six handfuls of sulphate of potash around the tree and then water in with two teaspoons of Epsom salts mixed into 10 litres of water.
